Many voices of hope at AARC gala dinner

There can be no question the Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre (AARC)  saves lives. Just ask the more than 544 adolescents and their more than 2000 family members who have successfully graduated from AARC over the past 22 years. When a young person walks through the doors of AARC, they are desperate. Completely hopeless. And often  suicidal.

The devastating spiral of adolescent addiction to alcohol and/or drugs rips everyone apart, and yet, thanks to AARC, clients graduate from its programs feeling freedom and hope. And AARC’s 18th annual signature fundraiser-held May 21 at the Telus Convention Centre- was an inspiring evening indeed with the apt theme being Voices of Hope.

That the gala netted (yes, netted!) $815,000 will ensure adolescents and their families can continue to access AARC’s life-saving programs.

Highlights of the must-attend gala included heartfelt addresses from AARC graduate parents Karen Macdonald and Brenda B. and AARC graduate Braydon B and a special performance by AARC graduate sibling Jordan Macdonald (accompanied by Hugo McLaughlin). AARC board chair Ann McCaig’s remarks garnered-again-a standing ovation and Linda Olsen’s masterful emceeing skills were just the right touch for the emotionally powerful evening. Superb silent auction items, raffle draws, and terrific live auction items garnered top dollar thanks to auctioneer Danny Hooper.

Who was not in attendance at the gala would make a much shorter listing as seemingly everyone attended including: AARC executive director Dr. Dean Vause and his wife Joanne; AAR director of development Donna Edwards; gala committee volunteer members Anna Scott, Kara McLennan, Courtney Bishop, Crystal Scott, Justin Bobier, Kathryn Marshall, Kevin Laurin, Kevin Turner and Robyn Junghans; Connacher Oil and Gas’ Dean Kaiser and his wife Betty Jo Kaiser of  QR 77 News Talk Radio fame; Calgary Children’s Foundation chair John Vos and his daughter Emily Vos; Remington Development Corporation’s Randy Remington, Donna Remington, Alanna Remington, Ryan Remington, Jamie Cooper and Cody Clayton (and here, I must heartily salute Remington on being the exclusive title sponsor since day one); Cynthia Moore; Marion Dixon; Eva Friesen; Dr. Nigel Shrive and his wife Sue Shrive; Dr. Susan Benseler; Dr. Dianne Mosher; Marshall and Sherie Toner; John and Donna Ferrara-Kerr; David and Leslie Bissett;  Rich Waller and his wife Jane McCaig and their daughter Emma; and  W. Brett Wilson with Misty Wind.
